GPX export failing due to characters outside of the Latin1 range

Updated today

Overview

If you’re unable to export a route as a GPX file in the Orca app, the issue may be caused by special (non-Latin) characters in your account name or route name.

GPX export can fail if your profile name or route name contains certain non-Latin characters (for example: ł, ø, ñ, ü, etc.).

If this is the case, you will receive an error which says:

"GPX export failed
The string to be encoded contains characters outside of the Latin1 range"

Troubleshooting

You can resolve this by temporarily updating your account name or route name to use only standard Latin characters.

Change your account name:

  1. Open the Orca app.

  2. Go to: Settings > Account Details > Manage Account
(This will open your account details in a web page.)

  3. Select: Update Information

  4. Edit the First Name field:

    • Replace any special characters with standard Latin characters.
      Example:

      • Rafał → Rafal

      • Søren → Soren

      • José → Jose

  5. Click Save Changes.

  6. Close and reopen the Orca app.

  7. Try exporting the GPX file again.

The export should now work correctly.

Change your route name:

  1. Open the Orca app.

  2. Go to: Main Menu > Spots and Routes > Routes)

  3. Click the three dots next to the saved route in question

  4. Click on the pen symbol on the right hand side of the screen

    • Replace any special characters with standard Latin characters.

  5. Click enter

  6. Close and reopen the Orca app.

  7. Try exporting the GPX file again.

The export should now work correctly.
