Using Orca on a Wi-Fi iPad (Without Built-In GPS)

Updated this week

Overview

If you’re using a Wi-Fi only iPad, you might be wondering whether Orca will work properly - especially since these models don’t include a built-in GPS chip.

Does My iPad Have GPS?

  • Wi-Fi + Cellular iPads → Have a built-in GPS chip

  • Wi-Fi only iPads → Do NOT have a built-in GPS chip

If you’re unsure which model you have, check in:
Settings → General → About → Model Name

Can I Use an External GPS Receiver with a Wi-Fi iPad?

It depends on the GPS receiver.

If your iPad is connected via Bluetooth to an external GPS receiver, Orca may be able to use that GPS data.

How to Check If It Works

The easiest way to confirm compatibility is:

  1. Download the free version of the Orca app

  2. Connect your external GPS receiver to your iPad

  3. Open Orca and check if your position is detected

If your location updates correctly on the chart, the setup is working.

Compatibility depends on the specific GPS receiver and how it transmits data.

What If I Use Orca Core?

If you are using Orca Core, you do not need to rely on the iPad’s GPS or a Bluetooth GPS receiver.

The Orca Core has:

  • Built-in high-precision GPS

  • Direct integration with the boat network

When connected to Orca Core, your iPad will receive accurate position data automatically.

Can I Use Other External GPS Sources?

Yes - with an Orca Core.

If you have another external GPS source onboard, it can be chosen as the GPS source that the Orca App uses as long as:

  • It connects to the Orca Core via a wired NMEA connection

  • It outputs GPS data onto the NMEA 2000 network

In this setup, Orca Core distributes the GPS data to the app.
