Rain in the Orca App

Rain helps you understand precipitation, general weather conditions, and air temperature for the selected Weather pin or route.

Use Rain to check whether rain is expected, how intense it may be, and how conditions change over time.

What does it show?

The Rain tab shows forecast precipitation, condition, and air temperature for the selected location and selected time.

Map

The Rain map overlay shows the forecast visually for the selected area.

It includes:

  • Precipitation heatmap
Shows precipitation intensity on the chart. Stronger colours indicate heavier precipitation. An expandable legend can be found in the bottom left hand corner of the map.

  • Weather pin or location along a route
Marks the location the forecast is based on and shows the condition and precipitation value for the selected time.

  • Data source label

Appears in the bottom-right corner of the map. AUTO is always shown currently because Orca automatically selects the rain forecast model for the selected area.

The Rain map also shows animated wind particles. These help show wind movement in the area, but the Rain heatmap itself represents precipitation.

Bottom sheet

The bottom sheet contains the Rain weather chart. This is where you can inspect rain, condition, and temperature over time. You can scroll the chart horizontally to move through the forecast.

Weather chart

The Rain weather chart shows:

  • Condition icon
Shows the expected weather condition, such as clear, cloudy, or rainy.

  • Day/night state
The condition icon also reflects whether the selected time is during the day or night. Furthermore, there is a line above the condition icon which appears yellow with the prevalence of sunlight and disappears during the hours where there is no daylight.

  • Precipitation bars
Bars represent precipitation. Taller bars indicate more precipitation. If there is no rain expected, the bars may be empty or very low.

  • Precipitation value line
    Shows precipitation values over time.

  • Air temperature value line
Shows air temperature values over time.

Together, these let you compare rain and temperature for the selected Weather pin or Route across the forecast period.

The precipitation value shown in the chart should correspond to the precipitation shown on the map for the Weather pin or location along a route at the selected time.

The available forecast range can vary by location. For Smart Navigation subscribers, Orca generally shows between 7 and 10 days of forecast depending on the data available for the selected area. The forecast may be more detailed for the near future and becomes less granular further ahead in time.

Free users and Plus subscribers can see up to 5 day of forecasts.

Expanded view

The expanded view of the bottom sheet also shows:

  • Forecast updated information.

  • Automatic selection for weather model.

Rain currently uses Automatic selection only. This means Orca automatically selects the forecast source or model for the selected area.

How is it measured?

Rain is measured as an hourly rate of precipitation.
