Wind in the Orca App

Wind helps you understand wind speed, wind direction, and gusts for the selected Weather pin or route.

Use Wind to check how strong the wind is, where it is moving, how gusty it may be, and how conditions change over time.

What does it show?

The Wind tab shows forecast wind speed, wind direction, and gusts for the selected location and selected time.

Map

The Wind map overlay shows the forecast visually for the selected area.

It includes:

  • Wind speed heatmap
Shows wind speed on the chart. Stronger colours indicate stronger wind. An expandable legend can be found in the bottom left hand corner of the map.

  • Animated wind particles
The Wind map also shows animated wind particles. These help show wind movement in the area. The direction of the particles shows which way the wind is moving, and the animation speed helps show wind intensity.

  • Weather pin or location along a route
Marks the location the forecast is based on and shows the wind direction and wind speed for the selected time.

  • Data source label
Appears in the bottom-right corner of the map.

Bottom sheet

The bottom sheet contains the Wind weather chart. This is where you can inspect wind speed, direction, and gusts over time. You can scroll the chart horizontally to move through the forecast.

Weather chart

The Wind weather chart shows:

  • Direction icons
Shows the forecast wind direction at each point in time.

  • Gust speed lines
Shows gust values over time. Gusts are short increases in wind speed and are higher than the regular wind speed.

  • Wind speed bars
Bars represent wind speed. Taller bars indicate stronger wind.

  • Wind speed values
The row marked S followed by your chosen unit of speed shows wind speed values.

  • Gust values
The row marked G followed by your chosen unit of speed shows gust values.

Together, these let you compare wind speed, gusts, and direction for the selected Weather pin or Route across the forecast period.

The wind speed and direction shown in the chart should correspond to the wind speed and direction shown on the map for the Weather pin or position along a route at the selected time.

The available forecast range can vary by location. For Smart Navigation subscribers, Orca generally shows between 7 and 10 days of forecast depending on the data available for the selected area. The forecast may be more detailed for the near future and becomes less granular further ahead in time.

Free users and Plus subscribers can see up to 5 day of forecasts.

Expanded view

The expanded Wind view also shows:

  • Forecast updated information.

  • Either Manual weather model selection or Automatic weather model selection according to your Orca subscription tier.

Manual weather model selection is available with a Smart Navigation subscription.

How is it measured?

Wind is measured by speed, direction, and gusts.

Wind speed tells you how fast the air is moving. Wind direction shows the direction of the wind. Gusts show short increases in wind speed above the regular wind speed.
