How can I use Orca for navigation in areas where its chart coverage is unavailable?

Orca users may occasionally encounter regions where chart coverage is incomplete or unavailable. Below are guidelines and solutions you can use to navigate effectively in such situations:

1. Understanding Orca's Chart Coverage Limitations

Orca provides marine charts for many regions globally, but some areas, such as South America, may not be fully supported. You can see an overview of our chart coverage in the article below:

Note that the Orca app displays only charts specifically designed for its platform and does not support other sources like OpenSeaMap.

2. Utilising Orca's Standalone Features With The Orca Core

Even without chart coverage, the Orca Core remains highly functional. You can use it to view and process your boat's NMEA 2000 data, including:

  • AIS (Automatic Identification System) information

  • Instrumentation readings

  • Autopilot and Radar integration

This ensures that critical onboard data is accessible even when charting services are unavailable.

3. Making The Most of Satellite View With An Orca Subscription

With an Orca Plus or Ora Smart Navigation subscription, you have access to Satellite charts.

To turn on Satellite view, simply click on the control panel button in the top right hand corner of the app, and then click on the Satellite overlay button.

You will notice that in this control panel, you also have access to the AIS and Community Spots overlays. Unlike the Satellite view overlay, these overlays are switched on by default. With internet connection, this information can also be very useful to see, even when chart coverage is not available.

4. Using Alternative Navigation Apps Alongside Orca

If you are navigating in regions where Orca's charts are unavailable, such as around the coast of South America, here are some solutions:

  1. Install an alternative navigation app on your Orca Display 2 which has chart coverage for your desired region. If your chosen app is available to download from the Google Play Store, you will be able to download and use it on your Orca Display 2. Thus, you will be able to continue reaping the benefits of the Orca hardware such as the extra luminous and waterproof screen in the process.

  2. Run the alternative app in parallel with Orca to supplement missing chart information. Use the Orca app in covered areas, and switch to the alternative app when Orca's coverage is unavailable.

By combining Orca's features with an additional navigation app, you can ensure smooth navigation even in under-supported regions.

4. Region-Specific Notes

For users operating in non-covered areas, pre-planning becomes essential. Consider downloading necessary charts from third-party sources and familiarising yourself with their functionalities before heading into these regions. We would also recommend carrying official paper nautical charts in all regions, something which is mandatory in some countries.

Again, the flexibility to run a supplementary app alongside Orca ensures you retain access to critical navigation features.

By understanding these limitations and leveraging the solutions outlined above, you can optimise your Orca experience and maintain reliable navigation.
