Routing Errors
When a routing error occurs, you will get a warning message which says 'Unable to find route'. Under this message, there will then be an explanation as to why the Orca App was unable to construct the route. Let's look at the different errors and the reasons why:
Upgrade your subscription to plan routes up to 1300NM
Error under 'Unable to find route' = 'Upgrade your subscription to plan routes up to 1300NM'
This error indicates that the route exceeds certain limitations. Each subscription plan in Orca has a maximum route distance:
Free Plan
Automatic engine routing: Max distance 50NM
Offline engine routing: Unavailable
Automatic sail routing: Unavailable
Orca Plus Subscription
Automatic engine routing: Max distance 520NM
Offline engine routing: Max distance 520NM
Automatic sail routing: Max distance 520NM
Orca Smart Navigation Subscription
Automatic engine routing: Max distance 1300NM
Offline engine routing: Max distance 1300NM
Automatic sail routing: Max distance 1300NM
If your planned route exceeds these distances, consider adjusting it or upgrading your plan.
Start is outside chart coverage
Error under 'Unable to find route' = 'Start is outside chart coverage'
This message can occur for one of two reasons:
The start or end of the route is outside of our chart coverage; or
The route is being made in an area where we have chart coverage but have not yet developed routing capabilities. These areas include, but are not limited to: Cape Verde, Mauritius, Maldives, Azores, Seychelles, UAE, Madagascar.
You can see more information about our chart coverage here: What chart coverage and routing coverage is available in Orca?
Unable to find route.
Error under 'Unable to find route' = 'Unable to find route.'
Settings such as Depth Limit, Routing Leeway, or Height Limit can restrict the app from finding a viable path. Ensure these parameter values are appropriately set.
To adjust these configurations, navigate to Main Menu > My Boat > Routing Settings.
In many cases, there are bridges and / or powerlines with unidentified heights. These are particularly prevalent in inland waterways. Orca takes a conservative approach and will not route under these obstacles unless you put your height limit in routing settings to 0m.
We also try to be conservative with depth limits and routing leeway. If you put Depth limit, Routing Leeway and Height Limit to 0m, the route should be possible - but do so at your own risk.
Route is going beyond available 10-day weather forecast. Move destination closer to start or set an earlier departure time.
Error under 'Unable to find route' = 'Route is going beyond available 10-day weather forecast. Move destination closer to start or set an earlier departure time.'
If the estimated route duration is longer than your forecast window, errors may occur. Here is the maximum duration for weather forecast permitted in your subscription:
For Plus subscribers there is a 5 day forecast.
For Smart Navigation subscribers there is a 10 day forecast.
To shorten your route’s duration, increase the boat’s Engine Cruise Speed under Main Menu > My Boat > Routing Settings.
Internet Connection Speed
There is no error in the Orca UI that pertains to this error. However, slow internet or unstable connections can cause timeouts during route generation. Run an internet speed test in any browser on the device you are using to ensure your network is adequate for processing complex routes.
General Troubleshooting Steps
Verify your subscription plan limits and ensure the route adheres to them.
Check the route is covered by our charting coverage or routing coverage
Check and adjust Routing Settings, such as Depth Limit, Height Limit and Leeway.
Increase the Engine Cruise Speed in Routing Settings for shorter route durations.
Test your internet speed if experiencing slow route generation or timeouts.
Look out for app updates in our change log, especially for changes aimed at improving routing coverage and speed.
